Practical guidance from A2NY IT WORKS. Adapt the checklist to your environment and document the decisions that matter.

Start with the work

List the people, devices, applications, and locations the network needs to support. Note which activities are business-critical and where interruptions would be most disruptive.

Document the physical environment

Record internet handoff points, cable routes, rack space, power, Wi-Fi coverage expectations, and any areas that need separate access. A simple floor plan is often more useful than a product list.

Define access and resilience

Decide which users or devices need access to which systems, how guest access should work, and what should happen if an internet connection or device fails. Capture these decisions before configuration begins.

Plan the handover

Ask for an updated topology, device inventory, key configuration decisions, and a test record. Documentation gives the next person a safe starting point when the network changes.
